The Other Maurice Brooks Gatlin
One of the reasons that I use the pseudonym “Doodlebug Snead” for my photography business is that I'm the grandson and namesake of another Maurice Brooks Gatlin. He’s “Senior” and I’m “III.” If you search on my real name, you’ll find him, not me. (Also, “Doodlebug Snead” is hard to forget!)
If you're looking for him, you must know something of his story. If not, just search on "JFK Maurice Gatlin" and go down that rabbit hole! Here is the info I have on him that was passed down in the family. His doings were kept secret even from the family. I first found out about his questionable activities from my history teacher, who was reading a book on the Kennedy assassination, when I was 17.
His birth name was Marshall Brooks Gatlin, he changed it as an adult.
He existed. I say this because some websites have expressed doubt.
He was born in Century, Florida, just across the border from Flomaton, AL, where the family lived.
He worked as a telegraph operator on a railroad as a young man, and travelled around the US.
He got a law degree from Tulane University in New Orleans in the early 1930s.
He worked as an attorney with Huey P. Long.
He travelled to Mexico with his son, my father, in the 1930s. I have photos from this trip. I don't know what he did there.
He was awarded a medal by the president of Guatemala. I don't know what he did for the president.
In the early 1960s, he told his (grown) son to get a gun, and teach his wife how to use it. (That was my parents.)
He had an office at 544 Camp St. in New Orleans. I had a stack of his business cards, after his death, which showed this address. This address is involved in the conspiracy theory ouevre.
He worked with an organization called the Anti-Communist Committee of the Americas.
He ran for US Congress against Hale Boggs. Apparently it was an epic defeat.
Later in life he lived in the Claiborne Towers apartments in New Orleans.
He died of a heart attack and fell from his hotel balcony in San Juan, Puerto Rico in May of 1965. This has caused much speculation; I have no data to confirm or refute any version of this story. But the location was San Juan, PR, not Panama, as some reports have it. I believe the name of the hotel was El Panama, but it was not in Panama.
"Brooks, at that time, gave every indication to the interviewing [FBI] agent that he was mentally imbalanced." I have seen an FBI document that agrees with this quote.
This is Maurice with his second wife, Bernie. He was tall.
